Dotdigital
Learn how to set up Dotdigital as a destination for audience exports and contact personalization.
Use Dotdigital as a GrowthLoop destination to export Audiences to Dotdigital address books and send contact data fields for personalization.
Prerequisites
Before you connect Dotdigital to GrowthLoop, make sure you have:
- A Dotdigital account with permission to create and manage API users.
- API user credentials (username and password) for Dotdigital API access.
- Your Dotdigital API region if your account does not use the default (
r1). Common values includer1,r2, andr3. - An integration token only if your Dotdigital account requires one.
- Data fields in Dotdigital for any contact attributes you plan to send from GrowthLoop.
NoteGrowthLoop does not create Dotdigital data fields for you. Create the fields in Dotdigital before you map them in GrowthLoop. The data field names in Dotdigital must match the field names GrowthLoop sends during export.
For help creating API users and data fields, see the Dotdigital developer documentation.
What GrowthLoop updates in Dotdigital
When you export an Audience to Dotdigital, GrowthLoop works with two parts of your Dotdigital account:
- Address books — Contact lists you use for campaigns and automations. GrowthLoop creates or reuses an address book named after your exported Audience. Contacts added to the Audience are added to that address book. Contacts removed from the Audience are removed from the address book.
- Data fields — Custom attributes stored on each Dotdigital contact profile, such as
first_name,city, orloyalty_tier. GrowthLoop writes the fields you map during export to the matching data fields on each contact. You can use these values for personalization in Dotdigital email content and programs.
GrowthLoop matches each exported record to a Dotdigital contact using the identifier you choose in Match Fields (email, phone, contact ID, or Dotdigital contact ID). If a contact does not already exist in Dotdigital, GrowthLoop creates the contact before updating the address book and data fields.
Create data fields in Dotdigital
GrowthLoop can only write values to data fields that already exist in Dotdigital. Create them before your first export.
- In Dotdigital, open Contacts > Data fields (or ask your Dotdigital administrator to create the fields).
- Create a data field for each attribute you plan to map from GrowthLoop, using the same field names you will map in GrowthLoop.
- Confirm the fields appear on contact profiles in Dotdigital before you run your first export.
If you are unsure how to create data fields in your account, contact your Dotdigital team or Dotdigital support.
Set up destination
- In GrowthLoop, navigate to Destinations in the left sidebar.
- Click New Destination in the upper right corner.
- In the Select Destination window, search for Dotdigital.
- Click Add Dotdigital.
- Enter the following destination details:
- Destination Name: Enter a clear name your team will recognize in GrowthLoop.
- Sync Frequency: Choose how often GrowthLoop should export audiences by default. You can adjust the schedule when you configure an export.
- API username: Enter your Dotdigital API user email address.
- API password: Enter your Dotdigital API user password.
- Region (Optional): Enter your Dotdigital API region, such as
r1orr2. Leave blank to user1. - Integration token (Optional): Enter your integration token only if your Dotdigital account requires one.
- Personalization field prefix (Optional): GrowthLoop uses this prefix on personalization fields sent to Dotdigital. Leave blank to send fields without a prefix.

- Click Create. GrowthLoop validates the connection by checking your Dotdigital account credentials.
Export to destination
After you create the destination, you can export an Audience to Dotdigital.
- Navigate to Audiences in the left sidebar.
- Open an existing Audience or create a new Audience.
- Click Export Audience.
- In the Create Export flow, select your Dotdigital destination.
- Configure the export schedule and settings.
- In Match Fields, map your source identifier to one of the supported Dotdigital match fields:
- Phone
- Contact ID
- ID (Dotdigital contact ID)
- Map any additional fields you want to send to Dotdigital data fields.
- Click Export.
GrowthLoop creates or reuses a Dotdigital address book named after the exported Audience. Contacts added to the Audience are added to that address book, and their data fields are updated with the values you mapped. Contacts removed from the Audience are removed from the address book.

Find exported audiences in Dotdigital
After a successful export, open Contacts > Address books in Dotdigital and find the address book named after your GrowthLoop Audience. Confirm the expected contacts are listed.
Then open a contact profile and check Data fields to confirm the mapped fields contain the values sent from GrowthLoop.
You can use that address book in Dotdigital campaigns and automations—for example, to target contacts who belong to a specific GrowthLoop Audience or to personalize message content with data field values sent from GrowthLoop.
To confirm the export ran successfully in GrowthLoop, open the Audience Exports tab and review the export activity tracker.
Congrats on successfully connecting Dotdigital as a destination!
