Shopify
Connect Shopify to GrowthLoop to activate audiences and sync customer profiles.
Connect Shopify as a Destination to activate customer data from your data cloud in your Shopify store.
You can use the Shopify Destination in two ways:
| Workflow | What it does |
|---|---|
| Audience exports | Creates Shopify customer segments and keeps membership current with dedicated customer metafields. |
| Syncs | Creates or updates Shopify customer profiles from a Dataset. |
This guide explains how to connect Shopify and export Audiences. To sync customer profile fields, continue to Create Shopify Syncs.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- A Shopify store and permission to create, configure, and install apps for it.
- A Shopify app installed on the store with the
read_customersandwrite_customersAdmin API scopes. - Your store's
myshopify.comdomain, such asyour-store.myshopify.com. - The app's Client ID and Client secret.
NoteShopify manages new custom apps in the Dev Dashboard. Review Shopify's app installation and setup guide if you need to create or install an app.
Create and configure a Shopify app
- In Shopify, navigate to Settings > Apps.
- Click Develop apps, then click Build apps in Dev Dashboard.
- Click Create app, enter a name such as
GrowthLoop, and click Create. - Create an app version and add the
read_customersandwrite_customersscopes in the Access section. - Click Release, then install the app on the Shopify store you want to connect.
- Open the app's Settings page and copy the Client ID and Client secret.
WarningStore your client secret securely. Do not include it in documents, messages, or source control. Learn more in Shopify's client credentials guide.

Export to destination
-
Click Audiences in the left sidebar.
-
Select an existing audience or create a new audience.
-
Click Export Audience in the upper-right corner.
-
Select your Shopify Destination.
-
Configure the export name, campaign type, and schedule.
-
Configure one of the supported Match Fields:
Match field Use Shopify Customer ID Match using the customer ID from Shopify. Use this option when it is available in your data cloud. Email Match an existing Shopify customer by exact email address. Phone Match an existing Shopify customer by exact phone number. Include the country code for the most reliable match. -
Click Export.
GrowthLoop creates a Shopify customer segment with the same name as the Audience. It also creates a dedicated, app-owned customer metafield to manage membership. The metafield is set to true when a customer is in the Audience and false when the customer leaves.
NoteGrowthLoop creates and manages the metafield automatically. You do not need to configure it in Shopify, and GrowthLoop does not change your existing customer tags.
NoteGrowthLoop updates existing Shopify customers only. Rows that do not match a customer are rejected, and GrowthLoop does not create new Shopify customer records.
Verify the export
- In GrowthLoop, open the audience and click the Exports tab.
- Confirm that the Shopify export is active and review its latest activity.
- In Shopify, navigate to Customers > Segments.
- Open the segment with the same name as your GrowthLoop audience and confirm that the expected customers appear.
WarningGive each GrowthLoop Audience a unique segment name in Shopify. If the name is already used by another Shopify segment, rename one of the segments and export again.
Congrats on successfully exporting an audience to Shopify!
